Are Baby Einstein movies really developmentally appropriate?
How are they different from watching regular TV? Doesn't this just introduce the unhealthy habit of sitting and watching TV instead of being active like so many children do now? I understand that the DVDs are supposed to develop language skills. I have a 4 month old, and I just have a hard time believing that they are THAT good for him to watch. Can't you achieve the same language development by exposing him to a lot of language and having him listen to music? (I have the Baby Einstein CDs and LOVE them.)
Thoughts? Comments?
They aren't different. A somewhat recent study actually proved that toddlers learn 6-7 less words per hour of Baby Einsteins that they watch than their non-watching peers do.
Infants and young children learn through face-to-face interaction; tv is not only useless, but replaces this interaction and leads to less/slower learning. As the saying goes, "If you want something done right, do it yourself." Certainly don't rely on a tv to do it.
ETA: It's been suggested that even music (or any sort of background noise) can delay development, as it makes it more difficult for a baby to concentrate on what their caregiver is trying to teach them. If you are going to play music, make sure it's not when you're trying to get them to concentrate.
