What age do you move from convertible car seat to booster seat?
My daughter is 27 months old and has outgrown her convertible carseat by the length but not weight. She weighs 24 lbs and I believe the next size up is the kind you use with the seat belts of the car? So is she still to small for a booster seat or should I just buy a bigger convertible seat?
You buy a bigger convertible seat. She is nowhere NEAR big enough for a booster seat. Most states, the law is 4 years and/or 40 lbs. If you were to get into an accident with her, there'd be a good chance she'd be decapitated, not to mention she's not even close to the weight minimum for a booster. I'd recommend getting a Britax Regent seat. If you get it on Hip Monkey's website, the proceeds go to the Kyle David Miller Foundation, you get free shipping, and you get over a hundred dollars off the cost of the seat because it's last year's fabric on the seat. It's a win/win! Plus, it'll hold her harnessed to 80 lbs. I love my seat!
EDIT: Nevermind, looks like Hip Monkey sold out of them. Another great seat for higher weight limits is a Recaro--they hold them to 70 lbs harnessed, and the Sunshine Kids Radian 65 and Radian 80 hold them to 65 or 80 depending on which you choose. I'd stay away from the Graco or Evenflo models. They don't crash test as well and don't have steel reinforced frames the way that Britax, Sunshine Kids, and Recaro seats do.
The only Graco seat that does have steel reinforcement is the Nautilus which is a newer seat which I wouldn't trust, yet. Plus, just from inspecting the seat myself, the steel seems to be where the belt path would be, not around the seat itself. The seat isn't reinforced by steel (otherwise the seat couldn't separate into a separate backless booster later), just the belt threads are. The fact of the matter is that Graco crash tests their seats on a sled at the industry minimum safety standard of a frontal impact of 30 mph. Because it's a booster and boosters are required to be side impact tested, it's tested as a booster without the harness in a side impact test. Britax, Sunshine Kids, and Recaro exceed the minimum requirements. They test at 40-45 mph as a minimum at a frontal, side, and rear impact, and their entire seat is steel reinforced. In all Recaro seats, and in the higher end Britax and the Sunshine Kids seats, the entire seat is SIP foam, not just the head rest. Graco cannot say the same.
