My pet rat has been biting recently, what are some possible causes?
Could it be because she is in heat or something? I have had her for a couple months now and never had a problem with biting until recently, she has always been very friendly..she doesnt bite hard but she is constantly nipping me and it's kind of irritating..I don't know how to get her out of this habit.. any suggestions?
Since your rat isn't biting hard, she may be playing, or smells food on your hand. If she's confusing you with food, make sure you wash your hands before visiting her & don't feed her through the bars of her cage.
If she seems to be biting you in play, you can easilly train her out of this. Whenever she bites, say "No!" in a firm, kind of high voice (like an annoyed rat). Then innediately stop interacting with her for awhile. This has worked for every one of our rats who would bite during play.
Some rats develop "cage aggression" which means they're fine away from the cage but territorial & nippy if you put your hand into or on the cage. We've only had 1 rat with cage aggression & we simply had to be careful around her if we needed to reach into her cage for any reason.
It's also possible that your rat isn't feeling well. If she seems ill or in pain @ all, she should see a vet for proper diagnosis & treatment.
