Why hasnt the taxi industry in Australia been regulated to start using environmentally friendly vehicles?
With the currently changing government and all of the "environmentally friendly" campaign adds on TV, it seems to me that any serious policy on climate change would start with changing taxis to eco friendly fuels/ hybrid vehicles. This technology is already available, i.e. Toyota Prius.
Wouldnt the large volume of taxis sold then force our domestic vehicle manufacturers to look at producing competetively priced eco friendly vehicles.
Surely the cost issue would be offset by the rising costs of petroleum worldwide and the fact that these vehicles are much more fuel efficient.
Taxis already run on LPG which is much cheaper and more environmentally friendly than petrol. The State government has recently (finally!) given the go ahead for hybrid vehicles to operate as taxis. So it's a start. But, given the benefits of LPG over petrol and the huge costs that taxi operators would bear if they were to make an immediate switch under regulations that you're suggesting... it's just not going to happen overnight but a gradual shift is happenning. The New South Wales Government has given its approval for companies to use hybrid cars as taxis and hire vehicles.
A Sydney company has been trialing a hybrid cab for the past 12 months to assess if they are commercially viable.
Transport Minister John Watkins says more of the environmentally-friendly taxis should start appearing on Sydney's streets soon.
But he says taxi companies are still assessing their cost-effectiveness.
"There are some other issues about maintenance and the costing of a vehicle over the length of its life," he said.
"Those figures will become clear through the test that is currently under way, but this is good news for people who want to see a better environmental outcome."
