Why do my 3 months old pitbull puppy growl and pull on pants and snap at me and bite hard on my hand?
I just got him a week ago. What should I do, because I try everything, I tell him "No" in a firm voice, but he don't listen. I try putting a toy in his month, but he continue to bite my hand. I try ignoring him, but he still bite me. I try pitching him on his lips and tapping him on the nose, but he don't stop biting me. I am also a new dog owner. I need some help since he is getting worser. He is shy when he is in new location, but he act up when he is comfortable where he is at. I don't know what is up with him since I know puppy play biting, but it since like it is more than that since he be showing his teeth and growling aggressively. Everytime I try to move my leg he just jump on me and start growling and pulling on me hard and he won't stop no matter what. When I sitting down he try to jump on me and biting me.
Ok, you're a new dog owner and you have a pit bull puppy?
Not the easiest breed for your first one.
The behavior that you're stating is puppy "play" right now, but behavior that YOU NEED TO STOP NOW!!!!!!
Your puppy isn't seeing you as the alpha dog - BAD SITUATION! (Regardless of the breed - this behavior will happen with ANY breed that sees itself as the alpha instead of the human as the alpha in the house)
First - if you are free feeding your dog (putting food out and letting the dog eat when he is ready), stop now. You should feed your dog, at this age, twice a day - once in the morning and once at night. Leave the food down for 15 - 30 minutes, then pick it up. It might seem harsh, but pick it up even if he hasn't eaten any of it. If he doesn't eat when you present food to him, then he'll be hungry until you present food to him again (which will be the next time he is fed - once you pick the food up, you are NOT to put it back down on the floor until it is time for his second feeding later in the day or the next morning).
Second - when he starts playing too rough with you, say "OW!" in a high pitched, loud voice. Then get up, turn your back on him, and walk away. DO NOT turn around, look at him or say ANYTHING to him for about 30 seconds. (You might have to shut the door to the room he is in to keep him from following you, just be sure to WALK away - running will make him think that you're wanting a game of chase). After 30 seconds, you can go back in and start playing again. If he bites too hard, repeat the "OW!" and the 30 second "time-out" same as above.
When he grabs your clothing and won't let go so you can walk away, still say "OW!" loudly, cross your arms, and look away. Do not say anything to him until he lets go. Once he does, you can look at him, say "good boy" and resume playing.
Do NOT sit down when you want him to stop a behavior - he won't give up (pits are stubborn, tenacious dogs). You must remove yourself from the room, and make sure he can't get to you (behind a closed door). Keep in mind that you aren't running away from him, and you shouldn't be afraid of him - you are giving him a "time-out" from your attention.
Since this is your first dog, and you have a strong breed, I would STRONGLY advise you to go to a clicker based dog trainer - they will teach you how to communicate to your dog with positive reinforcement techniques, and you'll have a well behaved puppy.
Also, with pits, you MUST GIVE THEM PHYSICAL and/or MENTAL STIMULATION! Pits are a breed of dog that can become aggressive if they don't have an energy outlet. Pits need a free run - tying them up is a no-no.
They can be wonderful dogs, and have gotten a bad reputation from people who have them and do not train or treat them properly. They are wonderful agility dogs, and actually very easily trained once they get the idea of what you want. They are extremely loyal dogs, with a beautiful, strong physical presence in a household.
Just be sure that you get the training for the dog AND you early on, and you'll both be fine.
