How can I keep my dog active and entertained while I'm not home?
My 6 year old Cavalier King Charels Spaniel is home alone and bored 9 hours a day. He's overweight and needs to be more active. (I walk him and play with him, as well as reduce his food.) Dont suggest anything to do with treats! His favorite toy is a plush hedgehog with 8 squeakers and a rattle, but thats an interactive toy.
Nothing you give him at home will exercise him enough to get thin but there are plenty of things you can do to keep the mind active and entertained. I agree, no treats but why don't you start feeding him his regular kibble in very different fashions? Feeder Balls, soaking it until it's mush, packing a kong and freezing it. hiding food around the house and training the dog to "search" for it etc. Find a really good pet store and ask them about the enrichment toys. You can even make your own. This should be a supervised toy initially to ensure yours isn't the kind of dog that will tear off the top and eat it.
