How do you play soft notes on a saxophone?
I just got a saxophone and, while not very good, I can get it to work. But when trying to play softly all I get is a really high pitched messy sound.
How do I play notes softly?
Playing notes softer on a clarinet or sax requires some decent lung control. Before you start trying this, be sure that you have built up the lung capacity to play the instrument in general first. This takes some time and practice. In other words, if you still get winded or light head just playing the instrument for a decent amount of time, you probably are not there yet.
Once you have mastered a regular controlled volume and it sounds "in tune", try this technique.
1. Pick a midrange note that is easy to hold for several counts. This may vary from person to person.
2. Blow at an average volume that you can control and hold the note. As you hold the note, tighten your ombisure and begin trying to lower the air flow into the instrument to slowly decrease the volume. The most important part is to try to control the sound and keep it in pitch/ tune.
3. Keep practicing this over and over, slowly switching between volumes (cresando and decresando). As you master midrange pitches, start to challenge yourself with other pitches that are harder to control.
4. At first, you will probably get very winded, so take some breaks to catch your breath between sessions. Also try playing some music that uses lots of change in volume. It will be more fun that just playing one note all the time.
