Would like to make my own baby food for 6 month old?
So Randy is ready now to start eating solids. I want to make my own and keep it organic if I can. We have a food mill, but not sure if I should start out w/ store bought stuff first. Fruits or greens? Do babies need to start out w/ oatmeal or rice cereal? Yes, we will be going to the Dr. this next week. I was just thinking I would maybe give him a taste. Thanks all.
Making your own baby food is the ONLY way to go (in my opinion). I do however, recommend that you buy rice cereal because it's hard to get the right consistency if you make it on your own...but you don't need it, especially if you're nursing! I used my blender to whip up all sorts of things in large quantity. I used ice-cube trays to freeze my babe's meals, then once frozen, would pop them out into a Zip-loc or Tupperware to store. I started both my girls out on organic squash, sweet potato, and pumpkin (they loved pumpkin...so good for them too!), but would only try out one food at a time, for about 5 days or so to make sure they didn't have any reactions to the goodies.
Directions for Yummy Pumpkin Mash:
2-3 cups boiled, pumpkin (leave skin on, then peel afterwards)
Combination of breastmilk and water used to cook pumpkin (to desired thickness)
Whip it up in the blender on high for about 3 minutes (or until smooth) and you'll have gobs of yummy pumpkin mash to freeze up for a few weeks of use! You can use this same recipe with any veggie or fruit, and don't be afraid to mix things up by mixing things like: sweet potato and bananas! Be creative and have fun knowing that you're doing the best thing by making your own baby food!
