Did my son have an allergic reaction?
We went to visit friends today and she did something I'd never do. She gave my 17 month old a container of chip dip and let him play with it. When we took him to clean him up though, he had red blotches on his cheeks where the dip came in contact with his face. It wasn't red bumps, just scarlet colored blotches. My son has never had an allergic reaction to anything, except certain baby lotions and soaps (and those rashes were usually raised bumps).
I'm just curious, did he have an allergic reaction to the dip? It's a mayo based dip, and a commercial one, so full of preservatives. It's not something he usually gets to eat (I use mostly organic, fresh food in my house). It doesn't bother me that he indulged a bit on junk food - I just want to know if it's something best avoided in the future.
The blotches started to go away after about an hour or so.
It sounds exactly like what my daughter gets on her face when she eats certain things.
She gets them on her face when she eats hummus (a bummer because it was a favorite food) ranch or blue cheese dressing, and has happened with french onion chip dip.
I have no idea why it happens, but it goes away in a few hours. I try to avoid having her eat any of it. I brought it up to my doctor with the hummus, and she said hummus contains sesame which is highly allergic for some people. The ranch, etc may contain sesame oil.
I would bring it up at your next doctor's visit.
