Organic Baby Yarn
Expert on yarn types for crochet (alpaca, shetland, merino)... I need your advice?

I am JUST begining to teach myself how to crochet. Online I found a woman who makes 100% natural yarn from her Shetlands, Alpacas, and Merino's.

I was wondering what would be THE softest yarn. I am making organic baby clothing... and I have to make sure it's super soft to the baby's skin.

The one I'm looking at is: a blend of 20% tussah silk, 60% merino, and 20% mohair.
She said she also has baby alpacas and shetlands.

Please tell me what to "look for" ... because it's hard for me to know what these yarns will be like to the touch without actually feeling them in person. I'm wanting something organic, soft... and NOT scratchy! I'm hoping the mohair in the blend mentioned isn't "scratchy." I grew up never wanting to wear sweaters because some had such static & scratchiness!

Any help/advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!

You have asked a good but very hard to answer question. It is difficult to know if a specific yarn will be hard or soft to the touch because so much depends upon the tightness of the twist. Since you want to make baby things you also nee to know the wash-ability of the yarn. I am currently working with a yarn that is a blend of alpaca, bamboo, and wool and it is VERY soft. Perhaps she could send you a sample of each yarn, a piece of only 6" is enough for you to get a good feel.
Usually a wool content of 25% or less will not make a yarn scratchy.
