How to get rid of the "lovey"?
My daughter is 5. She's had a pink blanket that she carried around everywhere with her since she was a baby. All that's left of it now is several 3 inch scraps, which she's still obsessed with. For the last year, she's only been allowed to have them at night, in her room. However, that's now become a problem.
We have a new baby, 3 months old. So we're up at least once a night. Last night, my 5 year old had us up twice because she couldn't find her blanket scrap. So I'm thinking this need to be the end of the blanket, but what's the best way to do it? Do we tell her we're taking it, explain why, and just put it away? Or should it just "disappear"? She'll be angrier and very upset if we take it, but if we pretend it's lost, she'll be up half the night looking for it. Plus I don't like lying... Anybody been through this?
Thanks.
I think the best answer is to explain why, and put them away, but not completely out of sight. Make that gradual. She may have been obsessed with it all along, but the blanket could mean much more to her than you realize. A five year old with a new baby in the house can (regardless of how much you try to prevent it) be feeling left out, and this is the manifestation of this, and she is clinging to the blanket pieces even more fiercely because she doesn't "like" not being the baby anymore. There are a couple ways to perhaps go through, I will try to suggest as many as I can think of, as each child is different and needs to be treated as an individual.
Suggestion 1: If she can't have them until night time, and you have (for demonstration sake) 3 scraps, show her there are 3, give her 2, show her where the 3rd one is (out of reach but in the room) and explain she's a big girl and it is time to move on to big girl things. Then when this is simple without any problems, move down to 1 scrap with the same explanation and result. When that has settled and is easy, then at night show her they are in the room, but she can't sleep with them. Then when that is easy, reduce down to 2 in the room, then 1, then it's time to remove it completely.
Suggestion 2: Get an inexpensive shadowbox type frame, frame them, put them on the wall (with 3M command hooks), and let her have them in the room, insight, but not in bed, and then slowly move them down the wall to the door until they are eventually out of the room, and hanging in a hall or something, then it should be safe to call her "separated" from them and take them away.
Suggestion 3: Tell her because she is being such a big girl and is a big sister now you want to give her a new toy of such and make sure it is something safe to sleep with, and let her play with it during the day to become as attached as possible, then that night she makes a choice to either keep the new toy and be a big girl or get only 1 scrap and not be a big girl tonight. Eventually the drive to be a big girl should win out though it may take "some" time.
Suggestion 4: Sew the scraps together (maybe) and then slowly each day snip a piece off the end so it gets gradually smaller and smaller until there is nothing left.
Suggestion 5: Sew a small patch of the blanket to her favorite bedtime pajamas, get rid of the rest, then when she out grows the pajamas the association to the blanket will be distanced, and hopefully no longer an issue, but you won't get awoken because she can't find it while she still "needs" it.
These suggestions were taken from the way my parents did things with me when I was 6 and my little sister was born and I suddenly wanted to sleep in their room and such, they let me have a pallet and each night it was a little closer to the door until I was outside their room and it was no longer an issue, and also how I handled things with my various foster children who cling to anything they have from home.
I hope something is helpful, good luck.
Most important is to keep your cool and your patience. Be level headed. What ever method you use, stick to your guns, as mommy and daddy know best, she's growing up to be a big girl, etc.
