Can you feed a baby butter?

I am very into organic, all whole foods for my baby. He is one year old, vegetarian, sugar free, and very healthy. I am still breastfeeding as well.
My question is...a friend told me that butter(salt free) can be good for brain development. She gave me a recipe using baby cereal and no sugar for some "cookies" and it calls for butter. I was thinking of replacing it with olive oil instead.
Does anyone know if butter is okay for a baby?

Dietary fats are absolutely essential for all people - and in particular for small children. I note that you are breastfeeding, which is outstanding. Your child should NOT be given skim milk instead of whole milk, later, until at least age 6.

Butter in small amounts as a component of cooked food the child can eat is just fine. Olive oil simply won't do the same job, as another poster noted.

If you are concerned about brain development, note that certain foods are helpful. Fish or foods with fish oil is excellent. So are certain berries such as blueberries and raspberries - and, surprisingly, so are mashed potatoes (use the REAL ones!).

Strict vegetarianism in infants isn't really so entirely wise. Some fish and fowl provide important food elements and types of proteins that growing humans require. Beans and other vegetable sources of proteins really are not enough (and yes I know all about the Seventh Day Adventists).

To truly stimulate brain development, play music often to your child. Classical music by such composers as Bach, Mozart, Monteverdi, Buxtehude, Schumann and others is exceptionally effective in stimulating brain development - particularly in areas of congition (I find the Baroque and Classical and some early romantic composers seem to work best). Reading to your child daily for a set period of time on a good firm schedule also is a major aid to brain development as well as a healthy physchology.

PS - The loss of butter and other dietary fats to replace it was one of the major contributing factors to Germany's collapse in WWI. It was also one of the major strategic considerations Germany attempted to address before WWII. Butter used in moderation - and particularly in a moderate-fats diet - is very healthy.
